It’s a terrible ad, but do we really need to cancel companies over it? So sick of this cancel culture BS. Just don’t buy their stuff if you’re not a fan of the ads! The end.

That ad was really abhorrent and memorably revulsive on one viewing. There's also a sidelight from Under The Desk News host Vitus "V" Spehar: "What's really interesting about this is how incredibly tone deaf and awful an idea it was, but also the fact that this is the first time that I could find that Good Good Golf had featured a female in any of their social media advertising at all."

Typo, sight: "They lost site of it."

I mean, I don't follow them but it doesnt take much effort to find women in their content. That's just lazy slander for clicks.

That took me all of like three minutes. Is their content predominantly male? Sure, its a bunch of guys. But people are overreading and overreacting because being upset is *fun*

I'm with you. I'm not going to go looking around for the rest of their content to see whether they do this habitually.

But I can be viscerally repulsed by the ad and say that everyone's overreacting and can we please move on?

You can’t shove a woman in a scripted ad, but you can line up a man to compete against her.

...and the man not only loses...he also looks incompetent and stupid.

I play golf with Calloway clubs. It’s a bad ad, and I was surprised to see the woman knocked hard to the ground, but the context was that the man knocking her down was saving her in today’s stylistically campy horror-flick genre that is weirdly, wildly popular.

Saving her how? Have you seen the movie? The focus isn't on saving anyone frome obsession, it is about the violent dark side of obsession. With no direct reference to, or even resemblance to, the movie, all that comes across is violent obsession. That is the direction they chose for a golf club ad? It is like showing a guy beating up a woman with a bat in a LouisvilleSlugger ad and saying it is not bad because it is a reference to the Shining. Creepy music doesn't make it automatically readable as a parody.

Secret third option, Jennifer: Perhaps approving an ad where a woman is getting shoved and not standing up for women in sports are not unrelated. I don’t think they are two separate issues; women are not being protected in portrayal and in practice.

If people don’t want to buy their products as a result of the poorly constructed ad, that’s anyone’s freedom of choice to do so. I don’t play golf so that decision is already made for me. 😉

Excellent as always, Jennifer 🙏

I depart from your post in three ways, none dismissive of or contradictory with your position:

1. To me the looming, angry man (is he holding the club too) yelling at the woman he just physically assaulted is the real problem: a body check can be slapstick, but “Jackie’s home” behaviour is horrific on far more levels for many who experienced or witnessed such abuse.

2. I think the lack of anyone (GG or Calloway) flagging the spot as MVAWG-adjacent is telling on its own: take a focus group of 10 women, and you’re surely going to get a strong negative reaction from at least one. I don’t have an idea of the # of men who’d react similarly, but I’m N=1 🤷‍♂️)

3. I wonder if there’s an opportunity for the likes of Callaway to have their feet held to the fire via some sort of “report card” — it worked for Stonewall Law, and maybe could work for the fight for the rights of females (athletics and otherwise):

e.g., Callaway (D+). Nice you performatively spoke against MVAWG re GG affair. How about speaking publicly about how the LPGA rules — and fairness — dictate that female golfers only play, and that you support those females?

It could certainly help tap into the ever-growing pushback against absurdities & abuses associated with trans entitlement programs … 🇨🇦 is showing how effective a 70+% boycott can be when it comes to industry giants!

Thanks once more, and keep up your amazing work everyone — it’s moving the window! 💪💪

One has to wonder how things that are *clearly* a bad idea get approved up the chain. I'm thinking of the Halloween costume that Target just had to pull: https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/target-apologizes-pulls-halloween-costume-191841826.html

The "clown" costume is readily recognizable as being based on blackface minstrel shows. Worse still, they used a black model! Was every single person in the chain that approved this costume too young to recognize the implications? Possible these days, I guess. But it baffles me when the approval chain fails so badly.

I don't care anything golf ⛳, Jenn.

But it is a bad ad.

I can see how the video could have been "better" with good directing. But it still would have been a stinker. One of my thoughts was: "Wow, golfers are worse actors than surfers".

Thanks for covering this latest silliness. If no one ever pointed out the emperor's nakedness, culture and society would have zero chance to regain sanity.

MBP's avatar

Why couldn’t they have had him shove another man instead? Or if he was supposed to be “protecting” her from the bad club, couldn’t he have just pulled her away from it with a warning like tone? And if they wanted to include females in their ad just have a couple as part of the group standing there. Not hard.

Good point. Terrible ad. Capital punishment…probably not.

Thank you everyone has been overreacting about this ad. It is very dumb of them to ruin Good Good forever. I don't think they will be able to ever get people to forgive them for the "horrible" thing they did. Bad ad but not enough for people to remove their merchandise from their stores.

Cancel culture ruined how people apologized. "We tried to show how obsessively good our driver is. We are sorry the horror vibe failed." That's it.

I do not like the Capitol One credit card ad that shows a lone woman in an elevator when suddenly 3 men materialize behind her. Same for the Discover card ads with young woman alone in a gallery when suddenly a man drops in behind her....

Spot on critique. And by the way, the USGA/LPGA rule adjustment still allows an XY to compete in their tournaments so long as the puberty blockers were taken prior to puberty. So, Hailey Davidson's only problem was that he started his transition too late. Just sayin'.

Yup especially in sport women need to decide are they equal or not ..they want it both ways
