My latest in the NY Post. And here. Some of this is probably redundant from what I’ve been writing about but figured I’d share. Since I wrote it!
Next up — some commentary on the Callaway golf ad sparking controversy.
Enes Kanter Freedom sat courtside Sunday as the WNBA’s Chicago Sky hosted the Indiana Fever.
He wore a simple black T-shirt reading “WOMAN — noun. Adult human female.”
He cheered for the Fever’s Sophie Cunningham when she hit a 3-pointer — and that set off Sky player Natasha Cloud, who approached him aggressively, shouting and cursing.
Security hustled on to the court to restrain her, but Freedom was the one escorted from the arena, ejected for the crime of defining a word featured in the league’s own name.
It was the latest incident in a weeks-long drama, as the WNBA and its teams insist on treating biological reality as a violation of house rules.
The conflagration started last month in Seattle, soon after Cunningham said she thinks girls should have their own sports and private spaces.
Celeste Keaton, a co-owner of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, exploded in rage at a fan in the stands, 16-year-old Ahnaleigh Wilson — for the twin crimes of waving a sign thanking Cunningham for her stance, and wearing an XX-XY Athletics shirt to silently assert that women’s sports should be reserved for women.
Then came Minneapolis, when women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines and I were courtside at a Lynx-Fever game wearing those same XX-XY Athletics shirts.
We held a small, policy-compliant sign simply saying thank you to Sophie — until arena staff ordered us to put it down.
Other signs, including those advocating transgender inclusion, were fine.
In Atlanta, league security told Kasey Thomason and her daughter that their XX-XY shirts were “offensive,” and that they had to cover them or leave.
Meanwhile, a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt appeared on the jumbotron repeatedly without issue.
In New York this week, a woman paid $100 for a halftime jumbotron message reading: “Thank you Jennifer Sey, XX-XY Athletics will save the day.”
The Liberty accepted her money — then censored the message into a content-free thank-you.
When she objected, they informed her that her text was not “celebratory” enough.
That same night, pro-trans messages ran on the board without a blip: “Welcome Trans Liberty fans! You are loved and you belong!”
The Liberty chooses to celebrate those trying to erase the female category, but not those seeking to defend it.
The pattern is unmistakable: The WNBA will not define the W in its own name — and it will silence, eject, rewrite and cover up anyone who does.
In doing so, the league is attempting to manufacture a consensus that doesn’t exist.
Roughly 73% of Americans do not want males to compete in female sports.
The public understands what the league pretends not to: Sex is binary, performance gaps are real and women’s sports exist because of those facts, not in spite of them.
Yet the league and its teams keep treating basic biology as hate speech.
They treat a dictionary definition on a T-shirt as a provocation.
They treat a thank-you sign for an outspoken female athlete as a security risk.
They treat a paid celebratory message as insufficiently joyful — unless it affirms their preferred ideology.
This enforcement of a chosen message is the opposite of inclusionary.
The league has an agenda — and it isn’t women’s basketball.
Yet the more aggressively the WNBA censors, the clearer the stakes become.
Every ejection, every covered-up shirt, every rewritten message teaches the audience what the league truly values — ideological compliance.
That lockstep conformity is more important to the WNBA than growing its fan base, becoming profitable or creating an environment where all are welcome.
Censorship of this kind always backfires: People notice who is being silenced and why.
They notice that the people demanding silence cannot defend their position in open argument, so they coerce consensus instead.
History is consistent, though: The censors are never the good guys.
The WNBA can keep pretending the W is negotiable.
The rest of the country isn’t buying it.
Every time the league tries to shut down the truth, more people will put on the shirt, hold up the sign and refuse to look away.
Team Reality is growing, and the censors are losing — as they always do in the end.
Keep pushing. We are pushing with you!
P. S. Am I the only one who gets torqued at the agrammatical statement “Trans kids belong”? Belong…where? To whom? I’ll finish the sentence - in the sport of their biological sex.
One point that should be noted what Cunningham is accomplishing from a team perspective. By becoming the lighting rod she is taking a ton of pressure off of Clark. irrespective of the political implications she has allowed her teammate to avoid distraction
