The political is personal which is why I'm thrilled about 2 of the executive orders about to be signed
One which prohibits government censorship and brings back free speech and another stating (the obvious) that sex (under the law, and in reality) is binary
It seems crazy that Trump is about to sign two executive orders that should be totally unnecessary. One which prohibits government interference of speech and another that codifies the biological reality that there are only two sexes.
(Trump said “genders” [as in there are only two genders] in his inauguration speech today, but the language — I think — in the order says “sexes” which is correct.)
Gender used to be considered a “social construct” but now the left uses it as a (distorted) reflection of biological reality. Gender is a squishy idea, unlike chromosomes and gametes. And it needs to be dispensed with forever. There are zero genders. Just personalities.
Stop using it. I wrote about it at some length here.
Why does it seem crazy that these executive orders are about to become the law? Because we should not require an executive order to prevent government censorship as it is already the law of the land, per the First Amendment.
And we shouldn’t need an executive order restating basic biology which is a law of nature.
But here we are. And I’ll take it. These orders will add extra protection and clearly communicate both as priorities for the administration.
This is personal for me. There is nothing theoretical about the censorship and cancellation that I’ve experienced in the past 5 years.
In 2020, I started a Facebook group called Open Schools SF. Every time I posted notifications about upcoming rallies in favor of opening schools, the posts were instantly disappeared. This made it nearly impossible to organize protests. It made it seem like no one supported opening schools when hardly anyone showed up at the rallies because they didn’t know about them! (As you can imagine, I’m skeptical about Zuckerberg’s sudden transformation.)
And while I wasn’t personally kicked off of any social media platforms, I was given a good dragging and reputational hammering for saying things like it’s completely insane that bars are open but my kid can’t go to high school. In spring 2021! More than a year into lockdowns! Private schools had long been open at this point.
The attempt to manufacture consensus (which worked for a good long while) by the likes of Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins made views like mine appear to be way outside the mainstream, unreasonable, insane.
This manufacturing of consensus, by silencing dissenters, made it easy for people to tar and feather me — and others like me who had the audacity to resist illiberal lockdowns — as a racist, eugenicist, fascist murder. It encouraged the mob to go after people like me who had an opposing viewpoint to the administration’s. And when the mob comes after you, and calls you career destroying names, that discourages others from speaking up who might agree. Social censorship and self-censorship, in addition to actual government censorship, created the illusion that there was really only one right viewpoint.
And who wants to be friends with someone who is deemed to be an unrepentant racist in the public square? Who wants to hire someone like that? I’ll tell you: in my experience, no one.
Even though I’m thrilled that as this great un-wokening begins (and yes, it’s just beginning) cancellation will become darn near impossible, it does nothing for the already cancelled. We aren’t let back in yet. We are shunted off to the side, outside of the mainstream. We make our own way now with many barriers still thrown down to halt any progress we might make. All for the crime of saying things years ago that are now considered to be accepted truths. Who doesn’t think closed public schools for 19 months were a terribly destructive thing? Only insane cultists still stand by it.
Next up — my husband was kicked off Twitter in April 2022 for this Tweet:
He stated facts (known side effects) and an opinion — not my idea of safe.
But as we know from Zuckerberg, Meta was coerced/pressured/forced (you choose) to take down true posts that stated anything negative about vaccines, which includes the fact that there were and are known side effects.
My husband wasn’t allowed back on until December 2022, after Musk had taken ownership.
Again, this was all about the government manufacturing consensus around covid vaccination.
What next?
My company XX-XY Athletics was permanently suspended from advertising on TikTok for this ad, called Stand Up. TikTok says it’s hate speech. Misgendering.
I’m not weighing in on the TikTok ban/temporary un-ban. I haven’t formulated my opinion yet. But I got no love for this censorious company, I’ll say that.
What else? Well, just this past summer, when male boxer Imane Khelif won gold in the Olympics in the women’s welterweight division, there was a groundswell of support for actual women athletes. We made a video of all that support. People shared it on social media with the hashtag #XX. But guess what? Meta blocked the hashtag! It went viral on Twitter/X but the hashtag was vanquished from Instagram and Facebook.
This is just a starter list of all the ways I’ve experience censorship and the repercussions of being censored for stating either true things (sex is binary) or opinion (public schools should have been open in 2020) now considered to be true.
This censoriousness has impacted my life and now my business in immeasurable and negative ways. I’m not in a forgiving mood about it all, but I am thrilled to welcome back free speech as the law of the land.
And let’s welcome back the reality that there are two sexes and they are not fungible.
Cancellation just got a lot harder for the left. When there is open debate and dissent and a wide range of viewpoints are out there, they just can’t cancel people anymore. It holds no power. They’ll still try, I suspect. But I also believe they will fail. (I’m not holding my breath about my own un-cancelling but I’ll let you know if it happens. If you start to see articles about XX-XY Athletics in the “mainstream” press that aren’t takedowns, that will be a sign.)
We shouldn’t need to say it. There shouldn’t need to be executive orders. But here we are. And I’ll take it.
i think the covid stuff is how i found you.
i was “canceled” by the socialist left (my old gang) for having a transient ischemic attack from the shot and warning others about the possible danger on twitter.
for this i’m blocked by hundreds of D-list podcasters and stand-up comics who told me that if i’d died it would’ve been fine b/c “everyone is expected to sacrifice” for the pandemic (in my pinned tweet).
just so we’re clear, the socialist left thinks it’s preferable that ppl die from an experimental/mandated pharmaceutical but it’s NOT OKAY to warn others of the danger.
viva la revolution!
Jennifer: you have been through a LOT in the last five years just trying to exercise your freedom of speech as an American. Probably what makes it even harder is that you were a liberal all your adult life and your tribe turned on you. It took bravery and guts to stand up like you did. Bravo!!
