According to woke-ism, yes. Woke-ism demands strict adherence to its ever-changing principles. Family members must also adhere. This is what makes it a cult.
First, I’d love a beer with your husband, on me. Second, I’d guarantee that none of this woke/cancellation bullshit came from any of your right-wing/conservative friends. It’s a point worth noting (and repeating).
OK, assuming there were mobs of piggish individuals doing the government's bidding. I'm sure there were some. 84 years ago, that's one hell of a long-ago moment..
You asked for an example, not a "recent example", not that conservatives have had the whip hand recently, at least not in the larger culture. Although the Jim Crow era South is well within living memory.
The point is not to defend the left or denigrate conservatives. It's to make a point about human nature and in-groups vs. out-groups. The idea that my team or tribe is immune is silly.
Conflating Jim Crow with conservatives is rich, indeed. The same mindset is alive and well in today's Democrat Party. But I will cede your point that thuggish behavior exists within the human condition, and decent individuals must always point it out and push back against it.
We need trials like this every generation because it's important to see how many people fail, and they are mostly the masters of society. People are thrilled for permission to let their inner Good German out. Most people identifying as Democrats and progressives did so with a vengeance.
I myself have no political tribe. The only time in my life I registered for a party was in 2016 so I could vote for Bernie Sanders in the primary. I voted for "none of the above" in the general.
Decades ago I was fired from a job for not bending to the will of my employer where I was expected to make a charitable donation to the agency that in turn funded ours. I refused because I disagreed with some of that agency's work and political stance.
I had far, far, far fewer resources than you and your family. Sticking to my guns was a terrifying moment.
You learned a good lesson and I hope you'll do much good as a result of it. You have been freed and you should feel much gratitude for finding out so definitively where the people in your social class stand. And much much gratitude for having the resources to survive it.
Great analysis. You can never be woke enough for the woke. As Amy said in this thread, they will eat their own eventually. But how many people will be destroyed before that happens? My kids, now between the ages of 18 and 28, self-censor. My daughter in college won't challenge professors for fear of getting marked down. (My son, a Math major, doesn't have politics in his program.) My only kid who doesn't self-censor is my liberal kid -- she has no fear that what she says is going to get her in trouble with her employer.
When I was in my psychotherapy training it was standard practice to help patients understand that they were not responsible for their husbands or wife’s behaviors. For instance a wife need. It be embarrassed in front of others for husband and vice versa. Seems like we’ve come a long way in the wrong direction to assign responsibility !thanks for all your efforts and integrity during crazy covid policies!
So good. People (aka the woke mob) tried to get my husband fired from his job because of my work. They figured out who he was and wrote the university. We are living through an age of McCarthyism, witch hunts, whatever you want to call increases societal paranoia that causes the snake to begin eating its own tail. The only positive we know from history is that one day we will be rightly understood as being on the right side of history. Hopefully sooner rather than later...
I very much appreciate that you didn't give in. Long ago I learned the hard way that the science that comes out is bent for money and power purposes when it intersects with media and government. Freedom and rights have to be stood for against the corporate, media and government power structure every day. Thank you and your husband for being a role model in this.
One of the deepest concerns I have from 2020 to now is the swift willingness some in the private sector have had to implement policies of overt employee discrimination. These are organizations that prior to 2020 seemed to me to have the highest commitment to diversity and inclusion who I would have expected to fight vigorously against any type of disparate treatment of employees regardless of the reason. Well intended or not, the net result is an endorsement of terminating employees based on their medical status and opinions of medical treatment (and apparently the spouse's opinions as well). It leads me to question if they think discrimination in the workplace based on some lifestyle factors is justified? And if it is, who decides what the criteria is? How do we protect employees from “mandate creep” and how do we prevent institutions from segregating and separating employees under the pretext of the greater good? There are not many examples from history in which those practices end well.
so true!!! it's like they were waiting for an opportunity to score brownie points with big brother. how many arts organizations enacted discriminatory policies that were even more draconian than those which the federal government "suggested"? the metropolitan opera insisted on boosters the moment they were "approved" without any mandate from on high! broadway theaters followed in lockstep.
here in charleston, sc where there were NO mandates and i could go into any restaurant, gym, movie theater, etc without showing papers, the Spoleto Arts Festival where i worked since 1980, required boosters, masks and photo ID- something that would cause a riot if you asked it of a voter- for all audience members, as if they were in the business of not selling tickets!
after all their claims to support diversity and art is for everyone, what about unvaccinated black people rightly suspicious of eugenics plots like the Tuskegee experiments?
any arts organization that acts as an enforcement arm of the government has lost it's mission and has no cause to exist anymore
One of the problems w "group think" is that the slippery slope... Eventually, they will eat their own and destroy from within. TY for being brave to call this bulls--- out.
This article hit home for me. My husband was an Armor officer in the Army and is now in the corporate marketplace. I am a “stay at home mom” again (lost my marketing job due to COVID) but I was a spouse that would accompany her husband and do the same at social events, wether as a military wife or civilian.
Long before social media, it was well understood that your husband’s yearly review was partly based on how active and dutiful you were as a military spouse. And then after social media and entering the civilian world, any opinion I expressed would be scrutinized. I made it a point to never wade into political waters, as one “wrong” opinion could lead to his firing. And this became even more real after CEO’s were fired in 2016 for donating to Trump’s campaign.
I guess since I’ve always lived my life as a conservative, I was used to the “rules of the game”. I’ve never liked it and it’s absolutely wrong, but it’s normal to me. The rules need to change. COVID showed many on the left what we on the right have had to do for years.
I don't know that I'd agree with your husband on matters around covid, but the idea that some kind of purity test is in place to expel anyone tainted with wrong-think is obscene. We should be free to disagree on pretty much everything. The 'woke' brigade are Jacobins, they will end up destroying themselves because nobody can ever be pure enough for them, including themselves. They do no good to the genuinely oppressed, they serve only to make themselves feel superior to everyone else
Why would you want to work there? If you’re intent on having your views out there, you’re absolutely free to leave and find an employer who embraces your views.
I like your husband! It’s cowardice on the part of senior leadership at Levi. And these “town halls” are now just public floggings and are set ups for grotesque displays of virtue signaling. When asked if you agreed with Daniel, the proper answer is “non of your f*^king business”.
First, I’d love a beer with your husband, on me. Second, I’d guarantee that none of this woke/cancellation bullshit came from any of your right-wing/conservative friends. It’s a point worth noting (and repeating).
To be fair, this is because liberals/leftists/whatever you want to call the other side have the whip hand at the moment.
If so, then can you produce an example?
Sure, HUAC.

important to see how many people fail but also heart breaking to lose people you valued as trusted friends until that point
It's important also to realize that the term "friend" is far too often used to mean "longtime acquaintance."

That's interesting and makes sense that that would be standard practice. No longer applies apparently!

so well written jen. love that you are sey'n everything. in your own words. your whole family rocks and is rock steady,

Your husband is awesome and you are lucky to have each other. Drinks on me our paths ever cross. Levi's employees should go work for The Current Thing Company: https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/how-to-build-a-killer-business-and

Conservatives have hijacked the term woke to support their beliefs.
You go girl!
